One floor of an old industrial building inside a perimeter block in the heart of Helsinki was turned into a 205m² private apartment. The space has 3.8 meters of free height and exposed concrete beams in the ceiling.

The client wanted an unique apartment with light and spatial excitement, and room to exhibit the family's private art collection. Industrial character and charm of the old space and building was to be kept while adding living facilities of very high quality.

The design makes a clear distinction between old and new elements by leaving the old space as a fully visible frame for the new living functions. The bedrooms are formed by the smoothly curved volumes containing the most private areas. These new glossy elements intertwine with the existing envelope with its concrete roughness intact. By opening the large doors between the volumes the apartment becomes a singular large space.

The apartment contains two terraces and a sauna department with a spa-like feel. Two floor-to-ceiling windows were added to bring extra light into the deep space.

Kerros entisestä teollisuusrakennuksesta vanhan Helsingin kantakaupungin umpikorttelin sisäpihalla muutettiin yksityisasunnoksi. Asunnolla on pinta-alaa 205m². Lähtökohtana olivat 3.8 metriä korkeat huoneet ja niiden katossa sijaitsevat koruttomat betonipalkit.

Tilaaja halusi ainutlaatuisen, valoisan ja tilavan asunnon, jossa perheen yksityinen taidekokoelma pääsisi oikeuksiinsa. Haasteena oli siis yhdistää teollisuustilan karheata tunnelmaa korkealaatuiseen lapsiperheen asuinympäristöön.

Asunnon uudet rakennusosat erottuvat alkuperäisiä vasten. Niiden kaarevat muodot jakavat suuren yhtenäisen tilan kolmeksi makuuhuoneeksi, sekä olohuoneeksi. Kaikkien seinä- ja kattopintojen väri on sereenisen valkoinen ja uusien seinäpintojen kiiltävyys ja tasaisuus rinnastuu vanhojen osien mattaan karheuteen. Huoneiden väliset ovet ovat koko tilan korkuisia. Kun ne avataan, koko asuintilat yhdistyvät isoksi galleriamaiseksi läpitalon ulottuvaksi tilaksi.
