The New Building of the National Library of the Czech Republic
The proposed building is tall, with a relatively small footprint, making the building easier to read from the street level. The building is divided into two parts. The slender vertical slab rising to 18 floors above the ground contains the library collections and staff areas.
The horizontal volume contains the main public functions and is suspended 22 meters above ground in front of the collections volume. It reaches towards the park providing the public with magnificent views over the Vltava River and the city of Prague. The two volumes are connected by a mesh-like superstructure.
The steel mesh is clad with pneumatic cushion cladding creating a unique indoor space between the volumes.
